Most people think a Wicklow test is all about the mountains. The real test is in the town.
One RSA centre in the county, on the Murrough in Wicklow town. Narrow streets, a one-way system and some of the steepest hills at any centre in the country. Learn on those roads with a local instructor, and test day feels like another Tuesday.
Your test is on the Murrough in Wicklow town. We know the routes.
Wicklow passed 54.5% of car tests in 2023, a touch above the 52.3% national average (RSA figures). Most learners think the test is luck on the day. Actually, it is the route, and here the route is won or lost in the town centre. The one-way streets, the on-street parking, the hill starts. Learn those well, and you give yourself the best shot at the right side of that number.
Wicklow Test Centre
Lessons in your town, not a long drive away.
Wicklow runs from Bray in the north down to Carnew on the Wexford line, with the mountains in between. We match you with an instructor who covers your end of the county.
Wicklow roads, taught by local instructors.
Wicklow is two driving worlds in one county. There is the fast N11 dual carriageway carrying half the county to Dublin every morning, though the M11 motorway stretches are off limits until you pass. Then there is everything off it: the Glen of the Downs, the climb to Glendalough, the narrow passes over Sally Gap. You will drive both worlds. We teach you for both.
There is one RSA test centre in the county, at the Government Offices on the Murrough in Wicklow town. It passed 54.5% of car tests in 2023, a touch above the national average. The number that matters more is whether you know the town centre, because that is where the test is won or lost. The one-way streets, the parking, the hills.
Bray and Greystones learners are a special case. You are nearer the Dun Laoghaire centre than the Wicklow one, so your routes and your test look different again. Tell us your town and we line you up with an instructor who knows exactly which centre you will sit and the roads around it.
The roads you will learn on
- N11 / M11The spine of the county. The M11 motorway sections from Bray are off limits to learners, but the N11 dual carriageway through the Glen of the Downs and past the Newtownmountkennedy, Ashford, Rathnew and Arklow bypasses is open to you, and the test can use that kind of road.
- The one-way systemNarrow streets, on-street parking and steep hills in Wicklow town centre. The layout catches people who do not know it, and the hill starts here are no joke.
- Marlton & Dunbur RoadThe R751 and R750 in and out of Wicklow town. Town-speed driving, junctions and tight turns, and they show up on routes again and again.
- The mountain passesSally Gap, the Wicklow Gap, the roads by Glendalough and Roundwood. Narrow, winding, slow farm traffic. Not test routes, but real Wicklow driving for life.

Do you cover the whole county, including the mountains and the south?
Yes. Bray, Greystones and the north. Wicklow town, Rathnew and Ashford in the middle. Arklow, Rathdrum, Baltinglass, Tinahely and Carnew down south. And the mountain villages like Roundwood, Donard and Glendalough. Tell us your town and we sort a local instructor.
How many lessons will I actually need?
Every learner does the 12 EDT lessons by law. Most people add a few more on top to get comfortable, and Wicklow town's hills and one-way system are worth extra practice. Your instructor is honest with you about where you are. No padding the bill.
Can I learn in an automatic, or only a manual?
Both. Most learners go manual so they can drive anything after, and the hill starts in Wicklow town are good practice for it. If you would rather learn automatic, that is no problem, just know your licence is then automatic-only. Tell us which you want.
