Five test centres in Galway. We know the roads out of every one.

Most learners think the test is luck on the day. Actually, it is the route, and the route is different at each centre. Loughrea passed 65.3% of car tests in 2023 and Clifden 64.2%, among the higher rates in the country. Every Galway centre sat above the 52.3% national average that year (RSA figures). We match you with an instructor who teaches on the roads of your centre.

Galway (Clybaun / Westside)

The Clybaun Hotel, Clybaun Road, Knocknacarra, Galway
H91 F62V
Covers: Galway city, Knocknacarra, Salthill, Barna, Moycullen and the west of the city
Pass rate: 58.7% in 2023 (RSA, car tests), above the 52.3% national average. This figure is for the Galway Westside centre, which is what this test serves.
The city test centre moved from Westside Shopping Centre to the Clybaun Hotel in Knocknacarra on 7 April 2025 while Westside is rebuilt. The RSA confirmed the routes were not substantially changed, so you sit the same Westside roads.
One large, busy roundabout shows up on the great majority of city routes. Knowing your lane before you reach it is most of the battle.

Galway (Carnmore)

Carnmore Commercial Centre, Carnmore, Galway
H91 Y48X
Covers: east of the city, Oranmore, Claregalway, Athenry and the Carnmore area
Pass rate: 53.9% in 2023 (RSA, car tests), above the 52.3% national average.
The centre sits at Carnmore Cross on the R339 Monivea Road, which runs down to the M6 Junction 19 at Oranmore and links to the M17 and M18.
It is a real mix: industrial estate, residential roads and rural driving, usually inside the 5 km zone around the centre.

Tuam

Airglooney Business Park, Ballygaddy, Tuam
H54 YD59
Covers: Tuam town and north Galway, Headford, Dunmore, Mountbellew and the surrounding villages
Pass rate: 58.4% in 2023 (RSA, car tests), above the 52.3% national average.
Tuam was laid out as a market town with the streets running into a central square. Several of those streets are narrow and one-way.
Three mini-roundabouts catch people out, the one in the middle of town most of all, because plenty of other drivers there do not signal clearly.

Loughrea

Clonfert House, Bride Street, Loughrea
H62 ET93
Covers: Loughrea, Athenry, Craughwell, Gort, Portumna and south-east Galway
Pass rate: 65.3% in 2023 (RSA, car tests), well above the 52.3% national average and one of the higher rates in the country.
The N6 Loughrea bypass, open since 2005, puts a set of roundabouts and 100 km/h road into the mix, so you get both town speeds and dual-carriageway speeds in one test.
The skill being marked is the change of pace: reading the speed limits and the transitions between town and country roads.

Clifden

Clifden Station House Hotel, Galway Road, Clifden
H71 AK52
Covers: Clifden and Connemara, Roundstone, Ballyconneely, Letterfrack and the west coast
Pass rate: 64.2% in 2023 (RSA, car tests), well above the 52.3% national average.
The N59 is the main road in from Galway, and the R341 is the coast road south toward Ballyconneely and Roundstone.
Connemara roads are narrow, and the Atlantic wind is a genuine factor on exposed stretches. Steady positioning matters more here than speed.

Why learn here with us

Galway roads, taught by local instructors.

Most people think a Galway test is a Galway test. It is not. The city centre at Clybaun in Knocknacarra is built around one big, busy roundabout. Loughrea is a flat town with a bypass and 100 km/h roads. Clifden is narrow coast roads in the Atlantic wind. Five centres, five different tests.

Here is the useful part. Every one of those five centres passed more than half its car candidates in 2023, all above the national average of 52.3%. Loughrea sat at 65.3% and Clifden at 64.2%, among the higher rates anywhere. A good rate helps. Knowing the actual roads helps more.

So we keep it local. Your instructor, your town, the roads your examiner actually uses on the day, which never include the motorway. East Galway is flat farmland and wide open roads. The west is narrow and exposed. We teach you the one in front of you, not a generic loop that could be anywhere.

The roads you will learn on

  • M6 / N6The main east-west road. The M6 motorway runs from Galway toward Ballinasloe and Dublin, and it is off limits to learners, so that is for after you pass. The N6 carries it into the city, and the Loughrea junction roundabouts are the parts you actually drive.
  • M17 / M18The motorway spine on the east side of the city, with the M17 heading north toward Tuam and the M18 south toward Gort, Shannon and Limerick. Off limits to learners, so these are for after you pass, not for your lessons or the test.
  • N17The northern route through the county. It now bypasses Tuam from the Kilmore Roundabout and runs on toward Mayo and Sligo.
  • N59The road west into Connemara. It links Galway city to Oughterard, Clifden and the coast, narrowing as it goes, with the R341 branching off along the shore.
  • Galway terrainTwo very different counties in one. Flat farmland and wide N-roads in the east around Loughrea and Ballinasloe, then narrow, exposed coastal roads through Connemara in the west.

Galway questions

The things people ask us about Galway.

Where is my driving test centre in Galway?

Galway has five. The city test now runs from the Clybaun Hotel in Knocknacarra, after the move from Westside in April 2025. Carnmore covers the east of the city, Tuam the north, Loughrea the south-east, and Clifden serves Connemara. We cover all five and teach the roads around each.

Do you cover Connemara and the west of the county?

Yes. The Clifden centre serves Connemara, and the roads there are their own thing: narrow, coastal, and properly windy. We also cover Oughterard, Moycullen and the N59 corridor in from the city. Tell us your town and we line up your local instructor.

How many driving lessons will I need in Galway?

It depends where you are starting from. A complete beginner does the full 12-lesson EDT. If you have driven before, or hold a foreign licence, six is often enough. We will tell you honestly after the first lesson rather than sell you twelve by default.

Do you teach manual and automatic in Galway?

Both. Manual is the common choice and lets you drive anything. Automatic suits a lot of nervous and returning learners because it takes the gears and clutch off your plate. Tell us which you want when you book and we match you with the right instructor and car.
