Driving lessons in Donegal

Donegal is not one test. It is three, and we know all three.

Letterkenny, Buncrana and Donegal town each sit you on different roads. Your local instructor knows the routes out of yours, from the steep Main Street to the Diamond.

The test, sorted

Three test centres in Donegal. We know the routes out of all three.

Most learners think the test is luck on the day. Actually, it is the route, and the route is different at each centre. In 2023 all three Donegal centres beat the 52.3% national average: Letterkenny 55.6%, Donegal town 59.5%, Buncrana 59.8% (RSA, car tests). We match you with an instructor who teaches on the roads of your centre.

Letterkenny

5 Pearse Road, Letterkenny
F92 N795
Covers: Letterkenny, Ramelton, Rathmullan, Manorcunningham, Newtowncunningham, Milford, Kilmacrennan and the Lagan
Pass rate: 55.6% in 2023 (RSA, car tests), above the 52.3% national average
Most tests start straight into town traffic off Pearse Road, then onto the long, steep Main Street where a hill start at the lights is likely. The ring road feeds the big roundabouts: the Polestar on the Port Road and the Dry Arch out towards the N13 and N56.

Buncrana

Government building, McCarter's Road, Ardaravan, Buncrana
F93 KVY6
Covers: Buncrana, Fahan, Burnfoot, Bridgend, Clonmany, Ballyliffin and the rest of the Inishowen peninsula
Pass rate: 59.8% in 2023 (RSA, car tests), above the 52.3% national average
This is Inishowen: narrow winding roads, hill starts, and Atlantic wind and rain to plan for. Cockhill Road has tight bends on a hill, so gear choice and visibility matter, and nearly all of it sits at the 50 km/h town limit.

Donegal Town

Public Service Centre, Drumlonagher, Donegal Town
F94 DK6C
Covers: Donegal town, Ballyshannon, Bundoran, Killybegs, Mountcharles, Dunkineely, Laghey and the south of the county
Pass rate: 59.5% in 2023 (RSA, car tests), above the 52.3% national average
The Diamond is the heart of it: a central crossroads with traffic from four directions, so timing your move is the whole game. The approach roads towards Killybegs and Ballyshannon are narrow regional roads with tight bends, and in summer they fill with campervans.
Across Donegal

Lessons in your town, not a two-hour drive away.

Donegal is a big, spread-out county, from Inishowen in the north to Bundoran in the south. We match you with an instructor who covers your end of it.

Why learn here with us

Donegal roads, taught by local instructors.

Most people pick a driving school on price. In Donegal that is how you end up with an instructor who has never driven the Polestar roundabout or the climb up Letterkenny Main Street. The roads here are not the problem. Not knowing them is.

Three test centres serve the county: Letterkenny, Buncrana and Donegal town. They are not interchangeable. Letterkenny throws you onto a one-way out of Pearse Road and a busy ring road. Buncrana is narrow Inishowen lanes and hill starts off McCarter's Road. Donegal town is all about reading the Diamond. We teach you on the roads you will actually be tested on.

And it is working. In 2023 all three Donegal centres passed more than half their car tests: Letterkenny 55.6%, Donegal town 59.5%, Buncrana 59.8%, every one of them above the 52.3% national average. Learn the route, settle the nerves, and the test stops being a guess.

The roads you will learn on

  • N15The spine of the south. Lifford through Ballybofey, over the Barnesmore Gap to Donegal town, on toward Bundoran. Mountain road, real bends, changing weather.
  • N13 / N14The Letterkenny corridor. The N13 heads northeast to Derry, the N14 links to Lifford, and they meet the ring road at the Polestar and Dry Arch roundabouts.
  • N56The coast road. It loops from Donegal town round the west through Killybegs, Ardara and Dungloe up to Letterkenny. Long, scenic, narrow in places.
  • R238The Inishowen link. It carries Buncrana traffic to the N13 and round the peninsula. Hilly, winding, exposed to weather off Lough Swilly.

Donegal questions

The things people ask us about Donegal.

Where will my driving test be in Donegal?

One of three centres. Letterkenny at 5 Pearse Road, Buncrana on McCarter's Road in Ardaravan, or Donegal town at the Public Service Centre in Drumlonagher. Tell us your town and we will line you up with an instructor who knows that centre's roads.

Do you cover Inishowen and the south of the county too?

Yes. We cover Inishowen out of Buncrana, from Fahan and Clonmany to Carndonagh and Moville. We cover the south out of Donegal town, including Killybegs, Ballyshannon and Bundoran. Coverage is countywide, so just tell us where you are.

How many lessons will I actually need?

If you are starting from scratch the EDT course is 12 lessons, and that is the law. Most learners then take a few pretest lessons on their own route before the day. If you have driven before, we will tell you straight after the first lesson roughly where you stand.

Can I learn in an automatic?

Yes, we teach manual and automatic. One thing to know: pass your test in an automatic and your licence is automatic only. Pass in a manual and you can drive both. Plenty of Donegal learners go automatic and never look back, so pick what suits you.
