The test, sorted

Four test centres in Tipperary. We know the routes out of each one.

Most learners think the test is luck on the day. Actually, it is the route, and the route is different at each centre. Clonmel passed 59.8% of car tests in 2023, comfortably above the 52.3% national average. Nenagh, Thurles and Tipperary Town all sat below it (RSA figures). Those are not towns full of bad drivers. They are towns with tricky routes. Learn the route and the gap closes.

Clonmel

Poppyfield Retail Park, off the Cahir Road, Clonmel
E91 X0N7
Covers: Clonmel, Carrick-on-Suir, Cahir, Ardfinnan, Fethard and the Suir valley in south Tipperary
Pass rate: 59.8% in 2023 (RSA, car tests), well above the 52.3% national average
On the route: you are into roundabouts within the first minute, off the Cahir Road. Expect the Frank Drohan inner relief road, the Cahir Road and Cashel Road (R688) roundabouts, and town-centre work over the Old Bridge across the River Suir.

Nenagh

Government Offices, St Conlan's Road (R494), Nenagh
E45 T611
Covers: Nenagh, Borrisokane, Toomevara, Cloughjordan, Dromineer and north Tipperary
Pass rate: 49.4% in 2023 (RSA, car tests), just under the 52.3% national average
On the route: straight into the town grid, then the Borrisokane Road, Limerick Road and Portroe Road roundabouts come up often. A run out the Limerick Road, turning back before the M7 at Junction 26 because the test never joins the motorway, then narrow country lanes around Rathnaleen for the manoeuvres.

Thurles

Government Offices, Stradavoher, Thurles
E41 N8F7
Covers: Thurles, Templemore, Holycross, Borrisoleigh, Littleton and mid Tipperary
Pass rate: 48.0% in 2023 (RSA, car tests), under the 52.3% national average
On the route: Liberty Square is the test, where the N62 and N75 meet and traffic comes at you from every side. Approach roads like the Slievenamon Road (N62), Mitchel Street and Kickham Street. A match day at Semple Stadium changes the traffic completely, so the time of your test matters.

Tipperary Town

Canon Hayes Recreation Centre, Avondale Crescent, Tipperary Town
E34 HF98
Covers: Tipperary Town, Bansha, Cashel, Golden, Emly, Dundrum and the Galtee foothills
Pass rate: 46.2% in 2023 (RSA, car tests), under the 52.3% national average
On the route: a left onto Main Street (the N24) puts you on real main-road traffic from the off. The Bansha Road, Cashel Road and Limerick Road approaches, with Limerick Junction and its level crossing just west, plus estate roads like James Connolly Park for the turns.
Across Tipperary

Lessons in your town, not a long drive away.

Tipperary is a big county, from Roscrea in the north to Carrick-on-Suir in the south. We match you with an instructor who covers your end of it.

Why learn here with us

Tipperary roads, taught by local instructors.

Most people pick a driving school on price, then sit a test on roads they have never driven. That is the easy way to fail. Tipperary is a big county with four very different test centres, and the route out of Clonmel looks nothing like the route out of Nenagh. Knowing which one you will sit, and the roads around it, is most of the work.

The numbers say it plainly. In 2023 Clonmel passed 59.8% of car tests, comfortably above the 52.3% national average. Nenagh, Thurles and Tipperary Town all sat below it. They are towns with tricky test routes: Liberty Square in Thurles where the N62 and N75 collide, the N24 running straight through the middle of Tipperary Town, the roundabouts that ring Clonmel. Learn the route and the gap closes.

We cover the whole county, from Roscrea in the north to Carrick-on-Suir in the south, on the roads you will actually be tested on. Same instructor, your own pace, your local centre. Start with one lesson and see how you get on.

The roads you will learn on

  • N24The spine of the county. It runs Limerick to Tipperary Town to Cahir to Clonmel to Carrick-on-Suir, straight through the middle of both Tipperary Town and Clonmel.
  • M8 / N8The Dublin to Cork motorway bypasses Cashel and Cahir, crossing the River Suir west of Cahir. Learners are not allowed on it and the test never uses it, so it is for after you pass. Your lessons stay on the roads through the towns.
  • M7Across the north of the county past Roscrea and Nenagh, with Nenagh sitting right at Junction 26. It is a motorway, so learners stay off it and the test never uses it. You build your slip-road and merging skills on the N-roads instead.
  • N62 and N75These two meet at Liberty Square in Thurles, the busiest point on the Thurles test. Multi-direction junctions and town-centre observation.

Tipperary questions

The things people ask us about Tipperary.

Where is my test centre in Tipperary?

There are four. Clonmel is at Poppyfield Retail Park off the Cahir Road. Nenagh is at the Government Offices on St Conlan's Road. Thurles is at the Government Offices in Stradavoher. Tipperary Town is at the Canon Hayes Recreation Centre on Avondale Crescent. We will tell you which one you are likely to sit and teach you on those roads.

Do you cover north Tipperary as well as the south?

Yes. From Nenagh, Roscrea and Borrisokane in the north to Clonmel, Cahir and Carrick-on-Suir in the south, and Thurles and Templemore in the middle. Tell us your town and we will line you up with your local instructor.

How many lessons will I need?

It depends where you are starting from. A complete beginner does the 12 Essential Driver Training lessons the RSA requires, then a few pretest lessons on your route. If you have driven before, you may need fewer. We will be honest with you after the first one.

Can I learn in an automatic, or only manual?

Both. Most learners go manual so they can drive anything afterwards, but if an automatic suits you better we can sort that. Just say so when you book and we will match you with the right instructor and car.
