Passing in Cavan is not luck. It is knowing the hills and the town.
One test centre, at the Cavan Crystal Hotel on the Dublin Road. We teach on the roads it uses: the N3 approach, the town-centre junctions, and the drumlin hill starts that catch people out.
Your test is in Cavan town. We know the routes.
Cavan held a 55.0% car pass rate in 2023, a bit above the 52.3% national average that year (RSA figures). Most learners think the test is luck on the day. Actually, it is the ground itself, the hills and the town, and in a one-centre county there is only one set of routes to learn. Learn it well, and you give yourself the best shot at the right side of that number.
Cavan Test Centre
Lessons in your town, not a two-hour drive away.
Cavan is spread out, from the town down to Virginia and Kingscourt and out to the western lakes. We match you with an instructor who covers your end of the county.
Cavan roads, taught by local instructors.
Most people pick a driving school on price. In Cavan that is a gamble, because the test here is about the ground itself. The town is built on drumlins, the streets rise and fall, and a hill start at a junction is almost a given. An instructor who knows that teaches it from the first lesson.
There is one test centre in the county, at the Cavan Crystal Hotel on the Dublin Road. It puts you straight onto the N3 approach and the roundabout by the Crystal Retail Park, then into the tight, busy town centre around Farnham Street and Main Street. Lights, crossings, yellow boxes, then out to the R198 and R188 for the rural speed changes. We teach on those roads, not a generic version of them.
Cavan town held a 55.0% car pass rate in 2023, a bit above the national 52.3% that year. We will not promise you a number. We will line you up with a local instructor, sort your lessons around the routes that matter, and have you ready for the day.
The roads you will learn on
- N3 (Dublin Road)The spine of the county. It links Cavan town to Dublin in the south and on to Enniskillen and Donegal in the north. The test centre sits right on the N3 approach, so you will know this road well.
- N55Runs southwest from Cavan toward Granard and Athlone. With the N3 it forms the eastern bypass that opened in March 2006, so national-road speed changes are part of learning here.
- R198Heads southwest out of Cavan town through Crossdoney and on toward Killeshandra and Arvagh. Good for the rural, narrower sections of a lesson.
- R188Runs northeast toward Cootehill. Country road with bends and junctions where you read the road ahead and adjust early.
- Drumlin terrainCavan is lakeland and drumlin country. The hills are small but constant, so hill starts and clutch control matter more here than on flat ground.

Drivers made here.
"I had two pre test lessons with Richard, and I feel they helped so much before the test. He was able to see my faults, explain them to me fully and correct them. I would highly recommend Richard to anyone looking to pass their test first try as I did."
"I did my lessons with Andy O Shea in Naas. And I literally could not have had a better experience! Learning to drive can seem scary at the start but Andy taught me how to be a fully confident driver."
"Just finished my 6 EDT lessons with Jonathan in Dublin. He's an excellent instructor. Very patient, friendly, and really knows how to make you feel comfortable on the road."
The things people ask us about Cavan.
Where will I sit my test in Cavan?
At the Cavan Test Centre, based at the Cavan Crystal Hotel on the Dublin Road, H12 P6E5. It is the only car test centre in the county, on the N3 approach into town. Your lessons cover the roads it uses.
Do you cover the rest of the county, not just Cavan town?
Yes. We cover Virginia, Bailieborough, Cootehill, Belturbet, Kingscourt, Ballyjamesduff and the smaller villages too. Tell us your town and we will line you up with a local instructor. Everyone sits the test in Cavan town, so we make sure you know those routes.
How many lessons will I need?
It depends on where you are starting. A learner doing the full EDT does the twelve essential lessons. If you are coming back to it or driving already, you may need fewer. Your instructor tells you straight after the first lesson, no padding.
Manual or automatic?
Both. Most people in Cavan learn in a manual, which matters here because the hills mean real clutch and handbrake work. Pass in an automatic and your licence is automatic only. We can sort either, so pick what you will actually drive.
Your Cavan instructor is a two-minute form away.
No payment now. Pick your town, and we will route you to a local instructor who knows the Cavan test.
