Two test centres in Louth. We know the routes out of both.

Most learners think the test is luck on the day. Actually, it is the route, and Louth has two very different ones. Drogheda runs out of Southgate toward the Dublin Road roundabout. Dundalk works the Newry Road, the town centre and the bypass. Both sat within a point of the 52.3% national average in 2023 (RSA figures). We match you with an instructor who teaches on the roads of your centre.

Drogheda

Southgate Shopping Centre, Colpe Cross, Dublin Road (N1), south side of Drogheda
Covers: Drogheda, the Boyne valley and the south of the county: Tullyallen, Termonfeckin, Baltray, Clogherhead, Collon, Tinure, Dunleer and Annagassan
Pass rate: 52.0% in 2023 (RSA, car tests), just under the 52.3% national average that year
The roads: most tests turn right out of the centre toward the Dublin Road roundabout on the N1, so the roundabout approach and lane choice come up early. The R132 ring road south of the Boyne carries a lot of the working stretch, with the river crossing back into town under the railway viaduct.

Dundalk

Newry Road, Dundalk
A91 RY8X
Covers: Dundalk, the Cooley peninsula and the north of the county: Blackrock, Dromiskin, Knockbridge, Ballymascanlan, Carlingford, Greenore, Omeath, Gyles Quay and Castlebellingham
Pass rate: 51.2% in 2023 (RSA, car tests), a little under the 52.3% national average that year
The roads: routes work the Newry Road, the Castletown Road and the Dublin Road, with the town-centre run through Clanbrassil Street and Park Street. The Dundalk Bypass and the Aura Leisure Centre roundabout near the Marshes are common, and estates like Greenacres and Townparks get used for the reverse around a corner and the hill start.
Across Louth

Lessons in your town, not a drive across the county.

Louth runs from the Boyne valley and Drogheda in the south up to Dundalk and the Cooley peninsula. We match you with an instructor who covers your end.

Why learn here with us

Louth roads, taught by local instructors.

Most people pick a driving school on price, then sit a test on roads they have never driven. In Louth that is a real risk, because the county has two test centres and they cover very different ground. Drogheda runs out of Southgate on the south side of town, turning toward the Dublin Road roundabout on the N1. Dundalk runs off the Newry Road, working the town centre, the bypass and the estates on the edge. Same test, two different sets of roundabouts.

The numbers are honest here. Drogheda sat at 52.0% in 2023 and Dundalk at 51.2%, both within a point of the 52.3% national average that year. Examiners mark the same basics on every route: observation, position, and your speed on the approach. None of that is luck. It is knowing which roundabout comes up when you turn out of the centre, and having driven it before the morning of the test.

We cover the whole county, from the Boyne valley and Drogheda in the south, up through Ardee, Dunleer and Castlebellingham, into Dundalk and out along the R173 to Carlingford, Greenore and Omeath on the Cooley peninsula. Your instructor comes to your door, the lesson starts there, and the pretest rehearses the exact loop into your centre. Local roads, local instructor, local test centre.

The roads you will learn on

  • N1/M1The spine of the county, south to Dublin and north to the border. Drogheda's Southgate centre sits right on the N1 Dublin Road on the south edge of town.
  • N52The west road out of Dundalk and Ardee toward Mullingar. It splits from the N53 on the western side of Dundalk.
  • N53The Castleblayney road heading west from Dundalk toward Monaghan. Faster rural driving once you clear the town.
  • R132The old coast road linking Drogheda and Dundalk through Castlebellingham, Dunleer and Dromiskin. It carries a good share of both centres' routes.
  • R173The single coast road around Carlingford Lough to Carlingford, Greenore and Omeath, the water on one side and the Cooley mountains on the other.

Louth questions

The things people ask us about Louth.

Where is my test centre, Drogheda or Dundalk?

Louth has two. Drogheda is at Southgate Shopping Centre on the Dublin Road, on the south side of town, and covers the Boyne valley and the south of the county. Dundalk is on the Newry Road and covers Cooley, the border and most of the north. We match your lessons to whichever centre your home falls under.

Do you cover the Cooley peninsula and the villages out to Carlingford?

Yes. We cover the whole peninsula along the R173, from Ballymascanlan out to Carlingford, Greenore, Gyles Quay and Omeath. The far end is about half an hour from the Dundalk centre, so the pretest rehearses that exact morning run in along the lough. Your instructor comes to your door wherever you are on Cooley.

How many lessons will I actually need?

Twelve is the standard. The EDT course is twelve lessons by law for a first manual licence, and for most learners that is about right. If you are nervous or starting later, you might want a few more before the test. If you have driven a bit already, the pretest plus a top-up may be enough. We will tell you straight after the first lesson.

Manual or automatic, can I learn either in Louth?

Both. The manual car and the automatic car run out of both Drogheda and Dundalk and reach every town in the county. Automatic is a little dearer per hour, and you get a licence that covers automatics only. If you are not sure which suits you, start with one lesson and we will talk it through.
